Samsung NX1100 Review. The Samsung NX1100 was released on April 11, 2013. It has a 20-megapixel sensor and belongs to the mirrorless cameras with APS-C (23.5 x 15.7 mm) CMOS sensor. This model replaces the previous Samsung NX1000. A more detailed review of the Samsung NX1100 is available at the link.

A beginner's view of the camera. The image quality is high, but the camera is rather capricious. The question arises: who will be suitable for this camera and who will not? Here it is! As you can see, this is a camera with interchangeable optics, but mirrorless. A year ago this camera cost 12 thousand rubles, and it came with a standard 20-50 mm lens, which can satisfy the needs of a person who does not aspire to create artistic photos. The lens mount here is from Samsung, so you will have to use either Samsung lenses or adapters for lenses from other manufacturers.

Key specs and features Samsung NX1100:

21.6 matrix: photos are sharp in sufficient light (flash bashmak is included);3-inch LCD screen: no optical viewfinder, but sometimes you want to look at the finished composition;
Full HD video;
the ability to shoot in JPEG and RAW (raw format, easy to edit);
Wi-Fi for sending photos to a smartphone and sharing on social networks.

The manufacturer positioned this camera as an intermediate between compact cameras and professional cameras, implying that with manual settings of shutter speed and aperture you can create creative photos. In addition, the dimensions of the camera are very compact: length - 11.5 cm, width - 6 cm, thickness - 3 cm, and the weight is no more than 350 grams with the lens. This camera was given to me to start amateur photography of people. I have to say that it's not my thing - I prefer to photograph nature. A $3,000 Olympus would have suited me better.

Now about the disadvantages that I noticed Samsung NX1100:

Despite the presence of an external flash, in the evening indoors with artificial light, as well as at dusk and night, the camera refuses to focus. As a result, if there is no focus, there is no picture. If you decide to use the camera at -30 degrees and at dusk, you'd better take out your smartphone - the focus will become even more capricious!

If you choose RAW image format, it takes about three to four minutes to process photos, which I think is excessive. After all, many people use cameras to take pictures of people, and time is of the essence, especially for beginners.

To get sharp pictures, you need to keep the camera still. If your hands are shaking (because of a hangover or just nerves), you can say goodbye to a clear picture! There is no image stabilizer in this model.

Summarizing the above, I believe that people who want to engage in photography professionally and aspire to become experienced photographers can consider buying this model. However, you should take into account the peculiarities of using different lenses (mentioned earlier). However, with the current dollar exchange rate, the cost of the camera has increased to 22 thousand. Perhaps you should spend more and buy a better and more standard product, for example, Canon or Sony. For everyday tasks, such as automatic shooting, this camera is too expensive.I admit that I may not have been able to fully unlock the potential of the device due to a lack of interest in photography. In general, this is a contradictory opinion. After much thought, I came to the conclusion that it is not worth recommending this camera. The device supports SD-cards, has a tripod mount and works from its own battery, which charge is enough for three weeks when used once a day for 10 minutes.

Advantages Samsung NX1100:

Excellent photo quality (better than Olympus and Panasonic and comparable to Canon 550-600D).
Low sensor noise and good performance at high ISO (RAW ISO6400 corrected without problems).
Compactness and lightness for traveling.
Autofocus is not inferior to Sony NEX and works fast.
Very useful Wi-Fi option.
Video recording of high quality with rich sound and colors.
Thoughtful auto mode for beginners.
Excellent price for such equipment.
A variety of colors, especially white.
Ability to shoot panoramas and 3D photos.
Longer battery life compared to Sony Nex-3.
Good quality photos in the 20-50mm kit.
Excellent macro shooting.
Good results when shooting landscapes.
Not bad background blur even with a kit lens.

DisadvantagesSamsung NX1100:

The exterior may seem less rugged than the Sony Nex, but in 4 years of use there have been no problems (assuming dropping it on the pavement would break both units).
Autofocus noise on the lens, but this is solved by fitting a different glass.
Lack of image stabilizer in the lens, but this can be considered a compromise for such a price.

The model is excellent for its price. Of course, the prices for professional lenses bite, but for beginners and amateurs it is most suitable. The quality of the kit lens is much better than that of Sony NEX (18-55 OSS kit lens at open aperture f3.5 is impossible to shoot, everything is fuzzy and blue-edged, 55-210 OSS is soapy and practically useless telephoto lens with terrible chromatic aberrations even at f8 - anything better in quality, you will have to save up or sell a kidney and buy a lens for NEX). The Samsung performs much better in auto mode than all the Nexes. For those who write that Samsung lens prices are high, I want to say that they have never bought optics for Sony NEX, where with equal quality characteristics the price is twice as high. For those who say that Samsung breaks more often, I recommend to treat the technique with care, although visually Samsung is less trustworthy. There is nothing close today for this kind of money. Buy a Sony a6000 for 40,000 rubles and get the same set of functions, but the automatic mode doesn't work!
The Android control on the NX1100 works great after installing a special app from Google Market. It works on two of my smartphones and one tablet. Why write untruths if you haven't figured it out? No problem posting photos over wifi directly to my favorite Facebook. I used to have a Sony Nex-3 and Nex-6, which would often get the flash wrong and over-light, I had to paper over it, especially the Nex-6, and there was no way to fix it because the auto mode on the Nex is not adjustable at all, and that's a shame about the Nex! You can't even adjust the flash strength automatically on the Nex. People, choose Samsung and don't listen to anyone!

This camera was a real discovery for me in the world of photography. If you try it in the store, hold it in your hands, turn it around, take the lens off, turn it on and take a few shots, you will forget about digital soapboxes forever. In fact, you'll start avoiding them, because the quality of this camera is far superior to them. You'll realize that an interchangeable lens is much better than one that comes out of a flat soapbox body. With this Samsung, you'll cross a certain boundary in both photo equipment and photography in general. And yes, this mirrorless can shoot you at 8 frames per second! But in a certain mode and for a long time records the footage on the card. Now about video. Available shooting speeds: 0,25x/0,5x/1x/5x/10x/20x. It's a pity that 0.25x speed is available only at a resolution of 640x480 (480p): very beautiful slow motion in this mode. And at 20x speed at 1920x1080 resolution you'll get colorful timelapses. Full HD pleases, 1080p justifies. The presence of Wi-Fi is also useful: control the camera from your phone via a special app. Smart Camera, I think it's called.

In the kit you will receive:

1. A camera body with a brilliant photosensor.

2. A good 45mm zoom lens with a focal length of 20-50mm.

3. A flash in a transparent case.

4. A strap to attach the camera around your neck.

5. Battery, drivers, manual, battery charging station, USB cable.

6. Adobe Photoshop Lightroom (I haven't installed it yet, so I can't tell you about it).

I plan to add a 16mm super wide angle lens to it for shooting landscapes and panoramas. It's also called a "pancake" because of its flat shape. With it the camera can be put in a pocket.

Advantages:

A good sensor with a cropped factor of 1.5, automatic sensor cleaning, many modes similar to top models from other brands, a quality kit lens, enough to get you started, and good color reproduction.

Relatively compact size, easy to carry compared to DSLR cameras.

Interchangeable lenses from the manufacturer fulfill additional needs, and their cost is also reasonable, and the quality of the optics is high.

Disadvantages:

Weak battery for long video shooting, 400 frames without flash, 300 with flash and about 150 in RAW mode, but this is not a critical disadvantage with other advantages.

The kit lens lacks a stabilizer, but this is expected for this price.

Lens caps without ropes, you can fix it yourself by drilling a 1mm diameter hole in the cap itself.

Comments:

Rumor has it that there are sometimes problems with white balance and color reproduction, but it depends on the photographer and the use of a gray card to improve color reproduction. The quality of pictures is very good, and with the right approach it is difficult to distinguish them from top models costing more than 50 thousand rubles. In general, I am satisfied with the purchase and have never regretted my choice.

After reading the previous review and looking at the pictures, I was a bit surprised.

There are probably several reasons for this poor color reproduction:

1. Limited dynamic range, but that's hard to imagine with this sensor size.

2. Improper in-camera processing of raw files or overly compressed JPEGs (to speed up burst shooting, save space or because of a weak processor).

3. automatic white balance errors.

4. The sensor is vulnerable to UV rays, which are plentiful in the mountains. If the weather is cloudy, color reproduction improves, it may be worth trying a UV filter in the sun. It cuts off UV rays that are sensitive to the sensor, adds warmth to your shots, and protects the front lens from damage if necessary.

5. Weighted average exposure metering errors. The green of the grass is cropped to make the sky look better, but the result is that the sky becomes pale and the grass loses its rich color. In such conditions, you can use a polarizing filter, which darkens the sky and allows the rich color of the grass to come through.

In the future, I recommend shooting in RAW + JPEG format. In this case, you will immediately get a ready JPEG file for viewing, and if you are not satisfied with the color rendition, you can process RAW in Lightroom and make the necessary adjustments.

To be fair, it's worth noting that the detail of the pictures is not bad. Considering that they are taken with a kit lens, the result is great. I'm thinking about buying such a camera for my daughter. It would be perfect for her first steps in photography, and at this price it has almost no competitors. Good luck with the process and good shots!
