Canon PowerShot SX620 HS Camera - reviews

The main reason for buying Canon PowerShot SX620 HS. The first reason is the need for a birthday present for mom. But such a purchase was justified, because my mother's old camera was already left somewhere in early 2010 in terms of photo quality. I suggested to my mother to take photos with her phone, and in ordinary life she does so, but when we go somewhere to rest, it is very inconvenient to take photos with her phone, plus sometimes it seems to me that she will drop her phone somewhere, especially when we run after the guide, and she tries to take pictures of something. It was for the options of trips and excursions that this camera was bought. I chose this one because it is small, compact and light enough. Plus, according to the characteristics of the stores presented at that time, I liked it the most.

Packaging of the Canon PowerShot SX620 HS. The most banal, cardboard. Inside there are instructions for use, a warranty card and a charging wire. There was also a seal on the package that the product was not opened, but in my case it was opened, but this is logical, since the product needs to be checked in the store, at least for its presence in the package. The battery, by the way, comes right in the kit, but you need to buy a memory card separately. I advise you to take from 32 gigabytes so that there is enough space to store frames and videos. Ideally 64 gigabytes, for this device such a volume will last for a very long time.

Specifications of the Canon PowerShot SX620 HS. So, a little bit about the main characteristics. The camera weighs a little, about 200 grams, including the battery. In addition to the photo function, there is also video recording and a very good zoom. The camera has the ability to connect via Wi-fi to devices and transfer photos to them, but this function is extremely stupid, I could not figure out how to use it, and I did not find any sense in it at all. There are 21 megapixels here, a fairly powerful customizable flash, but it still won't solve problems with night shooting. The body of the camera is metal and quite durable. We know this because we have already dropped the camera, it seems to be intact. In general, the characteristics of the camera are not bad, but certainly does not go into any comparison with phones and professional cameras, but I will compare the pictures a little later.

Ease of use of Canon PowerShot SX620 HS. In fact, the camera is quite convenient. There is a separate button for starting video recording. The photo button is located in a convenient place to click and it is also convenient to activate the zoom, it is located under the button. I will also refer a manual flash to the convenience for a tourist, this is a very useful function for those who go to museums, since it is sometimes forbidden to take photos with a flash there. And the automatic flash can pop up at any moment. And with this camera, exactly this will not happen, and the aunts of the caretaker will not burn you with a frozen look, what a scoundrel you dared to disobey. The controls are generally not complicated, there are only a few modes, convenient buttons, there are no different unnecessary functions like photos at once with color correction, as a result of which photos are obtained simply with the saturation twisted to the maximum. This is the most common, but convenient camera.

Settings of the Canon PowerShot SX620 HS. Everything is quite simple here, the settings are opened by pressing a single button. You can completely remove sounds, especially helps tourists in museums, there is usually even forbidden to take photos with sound. There are some zoom and flash settings, but there for the most part it's either enable or disable this feature. The date and time settings can be set so that it is written on the photo, although who needs it at all now. As for me, it's time to remove such a thing from the settings for a long time. Here, the waiting time for the camera to be inactive is regulated so that it turns off on its own when it lies for some time without any commands from outside. A convenient enough thing not to waste the battery, I generally set the setting in one minute. The language and screen brightness are also regulated right there, by the way, it's also not worth making it very bright, for the sake of saving battery power.

What are the buttons of the Canon PowerShot SX620 HS. So, let's go through the control buttons a little. The flash activation button is located on the left edge of the camera right under the flash. On the top panel there is a power button, a photo button and a lever to activate the zoom. On the back panel there are all the control and settings buttons, it's like a lever that switches between the two modes. Immediately, the button started recording the video. Everything about the settings is also here. Extremely useful menu button, toggle buttons, ok button and photo view button. As for me, only a separate delete button is missing here for complete convenience, but it's more carping and minor nuances.

Charging the Canon PowerShot SX620 HS and how long it lasts. During the trip, we charged the camera every two days, even after busy trips for the whole day. This is quite adequate, especially since it was not completely discharged, but up to a maximum of one strip out of three, and could work on it for another day, but we decided not to take any chances. Of course, videos and flash photos consume the most battery. If there is very little charge left, then it is better not to have fun with the flash. Plus, I do not advise putting the flash on the brightest mode without any need.

The shooting quality of Canon PowerShot SX620 HS. If you do not draw an analogy and do not compare with other devices, then the quality of the photo turns out quite good. The photos are clear, while the frames are not oversaturated and not pale, and approximately convey the reality, as it looked. In the dark and at dusk, the quality of the photo drops noticeably, the flash will not save you here, but nevertheless I will say that it still turns out to be passable for a portable camera. In the sunlight in good weather, I really like the quality of the photo, it's quite good quality for cameras of this level, but there is certainly a lot depends on you. The frames will be clear, but it will not stabilize so much, so it is better not to shake the camera. Only you are also responsible for the flash, and sometimes the final picture also greatly depends on this.

Video shot on Canon PowerShot SX620 HS. There is also a video recording mode here, but I have complaints about it. The picture quality is normal, but the picture itself is a little jerky, it does not move smoothly, this is especially noticeable if you look at the screen more than the screen of the camera itself. I understand that this is not a key function of the camera, but more as an addition, but nevertheless for me it is a minus. This is especially evident when you shoot something smoothly, small jerks are visible, the situation improves when something in the frame does not move smoothly, then you do not pay attention to it. But I still think it shouldn't be like this.

Who needs the Canon PowerShot SX620 HS. So, I want to highlight the main audience to whom cameras of this format will really be useful. I think this is an older audience. When it is possible to have a phone with not the best camera, or if a person simply does not like to mix several processes in one device. This is usually just inherent in the older generation. Although who would say, I still go with an iPod because it's more convenient for me. And this is really a good option for those who want a separate camera, but do not want to carry a separate bag for it, because with larger equipment, not even with a prof. cameras, a small case can not do. And my mom is just like that, she doesn't understand why she has to carry an even bigger bag with a camera. I understand it on the contrary, but everyone has their own truth here.

Significant disadvantages of the Canon PowerShot SX620 HS camera. So, and now, in order to somehow summarize the disadvantages, I will make a list:

1. A twitching picture when shooting a video. This is especially noticeable when shooting smoothly.
2. In comparison with the quality of photos from the phone, the camera significantly loses.
3. Not the best night shooting. This option is definitely not suitable if you are a fan of taking photos at dusk.
4. With a strong zoom, the photo is still very blurred, and the stabilizer does not cope with this.

In general, the disadvantages can really be significant for many, especially for those who are used to taking pictures on the phone, otherwise I think these disadvantages are not so critical, and the device is quite good.

I foresee the opinion that such cameras have outlived themselves, and why are they needed if all the same functions, plus many others are in the phone. And I completely agree with this, I also believe that the quality of photos on the phone is now many times superior to such soap dishes, and it will never be equal. But I also understand people who prefer to use separate devices for single operations, which the phone can do, but they are not comfortable with the phone. I am one of such people. I still use an iPod to listen to music. I'm just uncomfortable with the phone, it's hefty, if you drop it, it will be bad, plus pay for a subscription, and notifications are constantly coming. It's more convenient for me from a special device. And with cameras, it's exactly the same thing.

Conclusion. Yes, of course, this device sags in quality by my standards, but the camera itself is not bad, it is made of high quality, and my mother is quite happy with it. I think he deserved a four-star rating. And I also want to separately express my bewilderment about the reviews for this camera, which I got to know a lot while I was choosing which model to buy. I don't understand why, as an example of a photo, to post a frame from a deliberately dark room with artificial warm light, where not every good phone camera will be able to give out something useful. According to such photos, the level of photo quality is generally unclear. I found only a few reviews where there were photos from the street. Therefore, it took me a long time to make a picture for myself about this camera.

***

Now, it's amazing to me that there was only one review on this camera for a long time on the site. Yes, the model is no longer new, but it is easy to find it on sale in a variety of store chains selling all kinds of equipment. And I myself tried to get useful user information from the Internet before buying. So, I think my experience can easily be useful to someone. Well, yes, I was a little distracted. And perhaps I should start with my expectations and requirements for the camera - that is, why do I need it at all (hence, naturally, all the requirements follow): a couple of times a year I go on excursions, the duration of which is usually 3-5 days, and sometimes other events happen in my life that I would like to talk about have photo reports. Photos on a mobile phone, aka a smartphone in such cases do not suit me, and there is not enough space in the phone, you need a camera. At the same time, a fancy professional camera, and professional equipment also weighs a lot, I don't need it either, I'm quite satisfied with a good digital "soap dish". In general, with regard to small digital technology, I prefer the principle of "cutlets - separately, flies - separately". And I also listen to music not through my phone, but through an mp3 player.

In addition, my requirements and expectations were influenced by the experience of owning a previous digital camera, in return for which this camera was bought.

Therefore, there is no way to do without some comparisons with my "old" camera. So for a general understanding, I'll tell you a couple of lines about him. My "old" camera - Casio Exilim EX-Z400, has served for about 10 years (and even now, adjusted for some nuances, in working condition). I will not give all its technical characteristics, I will only voice those that I paid attention to when choosing the main character of this review.

In smart phototherms such as "focal length", "exposure", etc., I understand poorly, and I don't want to understand, so these technical indicators do not particularly affect my choice when buying.

And a little bit about the history of the purchase itself. Some problems with the work of the Casio camera appeared a few years ago, the sluggish thought of buying a new one still sluggishly visited me periodically, but there were no real attempts to do so. But I was supposed to have an excursion in July. And about a week before it, it turned out that the existing camera had more problems with the power button. It's a horror-horror: I either won't have time to photograph anything at all, or, if I do, photos will be taken with a crowd of strangers in the frame. So we urgently need to buy a new camera. There is no time for long thoughtful choices, I choose from models that can be viewed and held in my hands in household appliances stores located close to home or work (in my case, these are "M-Video", "Eldorado" and "DNS"). Regarding the technical characteristics, I assume that modern models have at least no worse than an existing camera, so I really chose according to the following criteria:

- supports SD memory cards - so that I can use the memory cards I already have;
- optical zoom - no less than that of Casio, "megapixel", by the way, too;
- the screen diagonal is 3.0" - i.e. the same as the "old" one;
- compact size;
- reasonable prices;
- well, just to be liked externally.

As a result, the stars converged on the Canon PowerShot SX620 HS. The manufacturer offers black, silver, red colors. I chose red. I ordered through the online store "M-Video" with receipt in the retail "M-Video".

The received purchase was packed in a compact box, upon subsequent closer examination, the completeness of the delivery included: a camera, a battery for it, a charger with a wire for connecting to an outlet, a rope strap on the wrist and a number of pieces of paper, including a brief instruction for the camera. A more complete and detailed version of the instructions is offered to download from the Internet in the form of a pdf file, there are no problems, there is no need to search, the instructions are posted directly on the M-Video website. I don't know how, but it's more convenient for me to read the instructions on paper... and there are 157 sheets in the file... and to print out this waste paper, firstly, it is a pity for me to translate so much paper, and secondly, even if it is printed, it is inconvenient to store these scattered disintegrating leaves - oh, how inconvenient! So reading the full version of the instructions passed me by (no, I downloaded the file!), here I hoped for intuitive clarity of the functionality of modern technology. The size of the new camera turned out to be slightly larger than the "old" one, the case from the "old" camera did not fit it, I had to buy a new one. At the time of writing the review, there is a history of using a Canon camera - more than 1300 photos were taken, these are two excursions, a vacation and one event. So after the fact of use, I have already felt some nuances.

1. Focus. From the first possession of the camera, I was surprised and unnerved by the focusing frame on the screen: it seemed that this frame lives its own life, because it jumps all over the screen. And what the camera will focus on may not be at all what I would like to photograph. This is especially noticeable when shooting with a large zoom. How to make the focus fixed on what I need - I don't seem to know until now. At some point I switched on something in the settings, now I can't remember what exactly, but it seems that I didn't achieve exactly what I would like. However, I seem to have gotten used to the jumping focus frame and have simply stopped paying attention to it.

2. Flash. Throughout my so far short period of use, I was firmly convinced that the camera lacks a very necessary flash option - "forced flash", this is when the flash always works when photographing, there is only an "auto flash" that works depending on the illumination, i.e. at the discretion of the camera and "flash is disabled". And in the automatic shooting mode it really is. It turned out that there was still a forced flash, but I found out almost by accident: when I started writing a review, I reached into the same PDF manual for a complete list of camera characteristics and, scrolling through the pages of the file, came across a description of the flash function. The desired option was found in the "P" (program) mode. And, as it turned out, there is it in some other modes, not all. I usually take photos in auto mode, and even on an "old" camera, the forced flash can be turned on automatically, so it just didn't occur to me that I should look for it in other modes. Maybe everyone has Canon cameras like that, but I used to have a camera of another brand. So with this option "intuitively understandable" - it did not work.

3. ZOOM. Well, it's just a song. The 25x optical zoom is the biggest plus of this camera. Digital zoom is also there, but I turn it off in all cameras at once. So all my delights are about optical. I think those who attend excursions will understand me: it happens (and often) that strangers climb into the frame with the photographed attraction, but I also want a "postcard" photo, without strangers. For example, in the second excursion I went on with this camera, we had an aunt in our group who constantly climbed closer to the sights (she was shooting on a tablet), so it was still necessary to contrive to take a photo without her presence. And that's where the 25x zoom just saved me: I photographed from a distance, from which other cameras could get pictures in the style of "the attraction is that flea", plus I got pretty large photos of objects that we looked at only from afar, looking at the panorama of the area.

4. Duration of work. There's nothing to find fault with here, for the "approximately 295 frames" stated in the characteristics, that is, in fact, a little less, the camera has enough battery, as applied to excursions, it's 1.5-2 days of work, but my "old" camera had enough charging for the entire tour (3-5 days). Although, in fairness, Casio has an increased battery charging time and the manufacturer separately emphasized it, indicated as an additional "plus sign" in the options. So from my side it's from the category of being naughty, "But the old camera was better." Battery charge indication, as, according to observations, and many other types of equipment with a similar pictogram, works in a peculiar way. Most of the total operating time - shows "the battery is charged", and as soon as it switches to "partially discharged" (two divisions on the icon) - it does not stay in this state for a long time, in fact it is already a signal that the battery will soon run out. At the same time, when the camera is already turned off with the motivation "that's it, the battery is dead" - after a while it can still turn on, then you can take another 1-2 frames, and this "accumulation" of charge can be repeated several times.

5. Operating modes. The camera turned out to have a very convenient switching of different modes, I started using some options only with the purchase of a Canon camera. So, for example, the frame format "Panorama" also exists at Casio, but since switching formats is not very convenient, changing the size of the frame "passed me by". And with the acquisition of the Canon PowerShot SX620 HS, I, as they say, was very "imbued" with the panorama.
The story modes of the new camera are also implemented more conveniently than those of the "old" one. Due to the inconvenience of switching at Casio, I almost didn't switch modes (there are a lot of modes - 40 pcs, of which I used about 5 all the time, and it's very far to "flip through" the modes I need). Canon has fewer modes, they are partially configured within the same mode. I would like to dwell on some modes in more detail.
"Night shooting" mode. Oh, oh, oh, this mode proved to be indispensable in the evenings, when it was already dark. The second tour was in October, at the end of the day it is already dark, photos in auto mode are no longer obtained at all. And in "Night Shooting" - please. And in this mode, photos taken on well-lit evening streets are also better obtained.
Fisheye Effect mode. The mode is cool and interesting, but, in fact, from the category "to play around".
The "Super bright colors" mode. Probably, everyone noticed that when photographing something of the same color, modern technology "mutes" the colors, makes them less bright than in real life. For example, when there is only grass or trees in the frame, photographic equipment makes them gray. Well, the name of the mode speaks for itself, the greenery turns out bright. Perhaps even brighter than in real life.

6. From other impressions of the camera. It feels like there are relatively many blurry photos. Perhaps this is the "reverse side" of a large zoom, or maybe it's because of the very features of focusing that I have not mastered. A retractable flash seems to be also not a very successful design solution. I have a feeling that in the future, during operation, the flash may turn out to be a "weak spot"

Hello, dear readers, thank you for your attention to my review.

I want to introduce you to my new Canon camera. I am not a beginner in photography, I am familiar with cameras of different manufacturers and types, but when it came time to replace my old camera with a new one, I had to work hard with a choice. I wanted a high-quality, convenient, versatile and not very expensive, within 15 thousand money. And it's possible, if you know what you want and where to look, you will definitely find it.

The novelty of 2016 from Canon attracted my attention: rich functionality, serious capabilities (20.2 mp matrix, 25x optical zoom, a fairly powerful flash at 4 m), beautiful appearance (I chose the camera of my favorite red color), simplicity and ease of use, excellent results even on the machine, but with the possibility of manual adjustment, the device is lightweight and compact, fits comfortably in your hand, turns on quickly and is ready to work in a couple of seconds, the price is available at the time of purchase in Svyaznoy (there was a price reduction campaign + a birthday gift promo code = 13290 money).

But there is no barrel of honey without a fly in the ointment.

This spoon is the disadvantages of the camera: average results when shooting moving objects and there is no way to quickly change the shooting program if the camera is in automatic mode; the battery is fully charged for only 3 hours of intensive work (I was shooting a school holiday), by the end of the third hour of shooting, a flashing orange symbol appeared, warning of a weak charge.
Therefore, I immediately ordered a replacement battery on AliExpress with free delivery.

The camera is not for a professional, but it will suit an amateur quite well. The shooting quality is quite decent both in good natural light and indoors with artificial light, even without a flash. I can compare the quality of the photo with a "DSLR" of the same breed and a compact from Nikon. In general, I recommend this camera to those who do not want to bother with the settings and shoots mostly on the machine. All photos were taken with this camera without using a flash, and the pictures of the camera itself were taken with a smartphone camera, please note that when uploading to the site, the resolution of all the pictures decreases and their quality deteriorates.

I have been using this camera almost daily for six months now and I am very happy with it, it is very convenient and practical, the quality of the pictures is consistently high, the camera is reliable - it has never failed. With not very intensive use (several dozen pictures per day), the battery charge lasts for several days. The spare battery from AliExpress does not differ from the native one in quality and duration of operation and charges quickly.

I was very pleased with this camera until it broke (matrix defect) and turned out to be unrepairable. The breakdown turned out to be a guarantee and I was refunded the money. I bought a Canon camera of another model, which I really regret, because it turned out to be worse than what it was. Now I'm selling a spare battery, because it doesn't fit the new camera..
