Elbrus - amazing facts

Ascent by cable car

Elbrus interesting facts

Elbrus is a majestic mountain with two peaks, rising on the border of the Caucasian republics of Kabardino-Balkaria and Karachay-Cherkessia - this is the highest point in Russia.

Elbrus is an extinct volcano, its last eruption was at the beginning of our era, consists of layers of lava, ash and tuff. The height of the western, highest peak is 5642 meters, the eastern one is 5621 meters. According to a well-known legend, it was here that Prometheus was chained for daring to bring fire to people.

At the foot of Elbrus there are two cable cars - the old pendulum, that's what it's called" Elbrus" and a new French gondola type called Poma. Both cable cars rise parallel to each other, starting from the Azau station, then to the Stary krugozor station, then the Mir station and the last station Gara Bashi. But the trailers of the old cable car reach only the Mir station, then the same rare single-seat cable car crawls, which, for sure, will be to the liking of extreme sportsmen. Interestingly, the 1675 m section of the new cable car from the Mir station (3455 m) to the Gara Bashi station (3847 m) is the highest mountain cable car in Europe.

The Ullu-Kam, Ullu-Khurzuk and Kyukurtlyu rivers begin in the Elbrus glaciers, they merge to form the largest river in the North Caucasus - the Kuban. Up to the level of 4000 meters, the slopes of Elbrus are relatively gentle, but higher they become already significantly steep.

The first to climb the peaks was a simple Balkar shepherd Ahiya Sottaev, and then he climbed 8 more times. And what is most surprising, at the time of the last ascent, he was ... 121 years old!
